Every technique, by book
What four trading books actually instruct you to do, reduced to rules, with an honest mark on whether we can compute each from the daily open/high/low/close/volume history we already hold.
TechniqueWhat it instructsStatus
Day Trading Course — Kevin Haggerty · 25,275 words · 7 techniques, 5 computable
Pullback to the 20 or 50-day EMA in an uptrendIn a stock trading above its 10, 50 and 200-day averages, a pullback into the 20 or 50-day is an entry rather than a warning. Pullbacks lasting 3, 5, 7 or 8 days are singled out as the strongest.computable
Narrow-range day as a no-trade, then entry above its highA narrow-range bar is explicitly not an entry. The entry is a fraction above the prior bar's high once range expands again -- contraction precedes expansion, and the trade is the expansion.computable
Two or more inside days forming a triangleVolatility and volume diminishing together into a triangle; the move out of it is the trade. Shape does not need to be perfect, but highs should mostly be lower.computable
1-2-3 breakout from a significant lowA three-push base off a major low, entered on completion. Read as institutional accumulation rather than as a shape.judgement
First-hour consolidationConsolidations in the opening hour are shorter but resolve the same way; rising lows against a level set up the first move to new highs.judgement
Volume as the tell for institutional sizeRepeatedly the deciding filter: a pattern without volume expansion is not the pattern. Volume is mentioned more than any other term in the course.computable
Relative strength against the indexPreference for names outperforming the market before the setup triggers, not after.computable
A Practical Guide to Swing Trading — Larry Swing · 14,269 words · 6 techniques, 6 computable
Force Index, dual smoothingThe book's signature rule and the most precisely stated in any of the four. Buy when the 13-period Force Index is at or above zero while the 3-period is at or below zero, in an uptrend. Sell is the mirror. The long smoothing sets the regime, the short one times the entry against it.computable
Directional Movement IndexUsed alongside Force Index to establish whether a trend exists at all before either signal is acted on.computable
Volume and EquiVolumeVolume treated as a first-class input rather than a confirmation afterthought; the most-mentioned term in the book.computable
Moving-average regime filterA simple trend gate: signals are only taken in the direction the averages already point.computable
GapsGap behaviour as an entry and continuation cue, second-most mentioned concept after volume.computable
The Master Plan: stated entry and exit rulesThe author's central claim is not an indicator but that entry and exit must be written down in advance. Stop placement is discussed more often than any single indicator.computable
Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets — John J. Murphy · 15,087 words · 7 techniques, 6 computable partial
PARTIAL here - a full 596-page extraction exists in the strategy library and supersedes this
Moving averages and crossoversTrend identification and the mechanics of crossover systems; the base layer everything else is measured against.computable
Oscillators and divergenceRSI, stochastics and MACD as overbought/oversold and, more importantly, as divergence detectors against price.computable
Volume as confirmationVolume precedes price: a move unconfirmed by volume is suspect. The most frequently referenced concept in the readable portion.computable
Fibonacci retracementRetracement levels as a framework for where a pullback should hold.computable
Classical chart patternsHead and shoulders, triangles, double tops and bottoms, channels -- with measured objectives derived from the formation's own geometry.computable
Candlestick constructionSingle and multi-bar candle formations as a shorter-horizon overlay on the same trend structure.computable
Money managementPosition sizing and risk control treated as inseparable from the analysis rather than as an afterthought.judgement
The Way to Trade — John Piper · 18,024 words · 4 techniques, 2 computable
Money management as the primary edgeThe dominant theme by a wide margin. The claim is that a mediocre method with disciplined sizing beats a good method without it.computable
Position sizing off risk, not convictionSize is set by what the position can lose, not by how strongly the trade is believed in.computable
The trading plan as a written objectA plan that exists only in the trader's head is not a plan; the book is largely about writing one down and following it.judgement
Behavioural failure modesLoss aversion, revenge trading and over-trading treated as the actual cause of most losses, ahead of any analytical error.judgement
What the checks say about our own ideas
The seven coded checks run against the highest-conviction ideas from our own screen. This is the part that could not come from a book — it is what happened when the books were pointed at us.
Volume confirmation fails on 26 of 30. Every one of the four authors treats volume as the filter that separates a pattern from a shape, and our best-ranked ideas mostly do not pass it. That is a specific, testable criticism: require volume expansion before promoting a formation, then measure whether the hit rate moves.
Provenance
These are notes, not reproductions. Every rule above is restated in our own words for implementation and coded from scratch; no text, chart or table from any of the four books is reproduced. The indicators themselves — moving averages, oscillators, true range, Force Index — are public constructions rather than anyone's property. Coverage is stated per book, and one source was only partially available here.

15Ken Wolff — Trading on Momentum
2002 · Practitioner book
Full 288-page extraction; only the gap and mid-range momentum system was coded, being fully derivable from daily bars. The tick-level microstructure setups need Level-1 bid/ask data this pipeline does not pull.
builtSCTAA + Intermarket
16Murphy & Myors — Statistical Power Analysis
2004 · Statistics textbook
Honest verdict recorded: the book is built around the noncentral-F distribution and never directly tests a proportion, so the hit-rate significance test uses the standard exact binomial toolkit instead. Two ideas were borrowed — minimum-effect testing, and asymmetric alpha for promote versus retire decisions.
builtSCTAA + Intermarket
What was left out, and why
Two sources were read and deliberately not built. A neural-network and genetic-algorithm thesis produced a negative result — neither model beat the strictest naive benchmarks — so it was kept as an evaluation template rather than a signal source. An essay collection yielded only two genuinely codeable chapters out of twelve. Several books that were built were only partly coded, and the reason is recorded against each row above. A library that lists only its successes is a marketing page.
This deal universe is illustrative. The engine and the base rates behind it are real; the deals are the model's worked examples, not live pending transactions. Nothing here is a position.
The screen
Pending deals ranked by expected return per unit of downside. Spread is what you make if the deal closes; downside is what you lose if it breaks. Edge is our model's completion probability minus what the current price implies the market believes. Size is a capped fractional-Kelly weight.

Why the top deal scores where it does
The probability is assembled, not asserted. Each line multiplies the odds up or down from the base rate for that deal type, and every one traces to a measured category rate. Above 1 raises termination risk; below 1 lowers it.

The three relationships
Cross-asset relationships that are supposed to hold, each measured rather than assumed. The dot sits between −1 and +1; the centre line is no relationship. Computed on returns, not price levels — correlating levels of two trending series describes the trends, not the co-movement. A relationship printing the wrong sign is the informative case.

What it adds up to
Rotation follows the commodities-to-bonds ratio; the top-down read takes market direction first, then the strongest sectors inside it.
Rotation: inflation-sensitive favoured. Commodities are strong against bonds — an inflationary tilt, which favours inflation-sensitive sectors. The market is sideways against its own average, and the strongest sectors by relative strength are Health care, Materials, Energy. The rotation rule and the ranking agree on Materials, Energy — two independent methods pointing the same way.
Relative strength against the market
Ordinary trend analysis applied to a ratio rather than a price: each instrument divided by the market, judged rising or falling on whether that ratio sits above its own average with the average sloping the same way. Watch for something rising here while falling in absolute terms — it is losing less than the market, which is what leadership looks like early in a downturn.

IBD Low-Price Screen — Acc/Dis B+ and better

Issue: week of 2026-08-04 · 110 of 305 low-priced names rated B+ or better on Accumulation/Distribution · 110 priced since the issue date.

Acc/Dis grades ~13 weeks of net institutional buying pressure. On low-priced names a rising price without it is usually noise, which is why it is the filter.

Crypto Funding & Positioning

Perpetual funding annualised across venues. Positive means longs pay shorts — the crowd is long and paying to stay there. Read-only public exchange data; no account, no positions, no orders.

No asset is at a crowded-funding extreme; leverage is not stretched in either direction right now.

This does NOT report liquidation prints — those need a websocket feed or a paid aggregator. It reports the crowding that precedes them.

A single insider buying is one person's opinion. Several buying independently in the same window is the pattern worth looking at, and it is the one a routine share grant cannot imitate.

Dark Pool / Off-Exchange Activity

FINRA ATS Transparency, week beginning 2026-07-13 — 44 days ago. This is NOT a live feed — FINRA publishes this data on a lag, and the numbers below are that week's, not today's.

FINRA has not finished publishing 2026-08-03, 2026-07-27, 2026-07-20. It releases ATS data in tiers, so the newest week or two carry only part of the market (54322 rows vs 187869 typical). Those weeks are excluded here — including one would show a volume collapse across nearly every ticker at once that is an artifact of the publication schedule, not the tape.
Venues reportingNames coveredBiggest weekly moverWatchlist flagged

Unusual off-exchange concentration

Flagged when the week's ATS volume sits 2.0+ standard deviations above that ticker's OWN trailing average — not a market-wide threshold, so a name that always trades heavily off-exchange doesn't flag just for being itself.

Off-exchange % of total volume is deliberately not shown market-wide: it needs consolidated tape volume as a denominator, which this free source does not provide, and an estimated denominator would be a made-up number in the column the worksheet is named after.

Fidelity. Diesel crack is exact (HO x 42 - CL; verified against Amit's chart to within the capture-time gap). Micron, Sandisk and SK hynix are exact. The vol panel carries VIX, VVIX and CBOE SKEW — Nations TailDex and SkewDex are licensed products with no free equivalent, so TailDex is absent rather than substituted. S&P implied financing is a reconstruction, computed as ln(F/S)/T from the futures basis: the same economic quantity as Bloomberg's BTIC spread, tracking the same direction and inflections, but it will not print the same level. Read its shape, not its number.

Chartbook Weekly Diff

Mansfield chartbooks, August 14, 2026 vs July 24, 2026. Compared over the 3,713 tickers present in BOTH editions.

_MACE stage readable for: July 24, 2026 95.3%, August 14, 2026 94.8%. (The extractor's separate `confident` flag is much lower, but it tests whether the full QUARTERLY SERIES was read, not the stage -- 94% of records it marks unconfident still carry a valid stage, so it is not the right measure for a stage diff.)

FRED / OECD long-term government bond yields (IRLTLT01 series), monthly with roughly a five-week publication lag — each row shows its own vintage and is differenced against the US at the same date. For reference the US 10Y closed at 4.67% on 2026-08-27 — the daily series above in the curve panel. A positive differential means that country pays more than the US, which is the carry and currency-hedging signal.

Align = 0.5×SCTR + 0.3×RankScore + 0.2×Trend — RankScore is the bounded 0–100 percentile of the ordinal rank (rank 1 → 100, last → 0), not the raw rank number. SCTR here is a computed StockCharts-methodology equivalent from free price data, not the official StockCharts number. Proxy now shows the actual ETF ticker at the chosen leverage (e.g. "1x: GDX", "Inverse: GLL (2x)"). SCTR 1M·3M·6M trend is accruing — the engine began logging daily SCTR ~2026-07-01, so these fill as 1/3/6 months of history bank (shown "–" until then, never fabricated). A mkt-cap-weighted vs equal-weighted subindustry column is a pending net-new add [expected input: per-subindustry constituent market caps — not yet in the SCTR feed].

OB/OS Composite blends RSI + Bollinger position + %-vs-20d-MA into one read (red overbought / amber approaching / green oversold-opportunity). Cloud Pos: Above = bullish, In = transition, Below = bearish; ADX > 25 = strong trend. Trend = 6-month closes sparkline; Quant Factor = the row's dominant style-factor exposure (same mapping as the Multi-Period table).

Market Sentiment — Composite & Component Indicators

Last synced: —
0 = extreme fear · 100 = extreme greed

Formula — fully transparent, no black box

composite = Σ (indicator percentile × renormalized weight)

Weights reflect media-citation frequency + documented reliability at statistical extremes. Missing/proprietary-data indicators are dropped and remaining weights renormalize to sum to 1 — a missing input is never silently treated as neutral (50).

Calculation methodology: Weekly IV from Yahoo Finance 30-day annualized HV proxy. Expected weekly move = IV × Price × √(5/252). Realized move = last 5-day price change. IV Rank = current HV position vs 90-day range (0=cheapest, 100=most expensive). Outlier = actual move exceeded expected by >50%. 0DTE forward = VIX/√252 × SPY price.

Paul Wimot (@paulwimot on X) is a volatility researcher known for systematic approaches to regime detection and vol forecasting. His work focuses on: (1) Volatility regime classification (low/normal/high/crisis), (2) Expected move accuracy modeling, (3) Gamma exposure impact on realized vol, (4) Cross-asset vol signal extraction. Key insight: realized vol clustering means yesterday's vol regime is the best short-term predictor of today's regime — directly applicable to your PSC risk management.

⚠ NAV Erosion Warning: YieldMax products (NVDY 52%+, TSLY 68%+) have very high yields but often experience significant NAV decay over time — the distribution returns capital not just income. Best for: short-term income, not long-term holds. JEPI/JEPQ/XYLD are more conservative with less NAV erosion.

How to read: implied daily move = price × IV × √(1/252). Positive dealer gamma + low VIX → market pins (sell-premium / iron-condor regime). VIX breakout > the investable-range high → buy protection / directional debit spreads. With your Unusual Whales API token this page adds live 0DTE volume, premium, GEX flip levels and flow alerts.

The math (per row): a short out-of-the-money option held to expiry. Premium = Black-Scholes price at the strike (IV proxy = 30-day realized vol × 1.1). POP (probability of profit) = N(d₂) for a short put / N(−d₂) for a short call — the chance it expires worthless and you keep the credit. Annualized yield = premium ÷ collateral × 365/DTE. Breakeven = strike − premium (CSP) or cost basis − premium (CC). EV = POP × premium − (1−POP) × avg tail loss. Strategy: cash-secured PUT on names you'd happily own lower (PSC longs / Hedgeye Q4 defensives), covered CALL on names you're short or that are stretched (PSC shorts / Mag7). Sell when IV rank is high (premium rich). Estimates only — confirm live strikes/premia with your broker; the Unusual Whales token upgrades IV to true option-chain IV and adds open-interest/flow context.

Key insight (June 5): SPX -0.90 30D correlation to USD = strong negative — dollar weakness = equity strength. Bitcoin -0.87 30D = also highly correlated to USD weakness (risk-on). Brent Oil +0.64 30D = positive correlation — oil rises with commodities when USD weakens. Gold -0.40 30D but 52-Wk range shows 24% time positive — less reliable signal currently.
